Of the thousands of minerals, that exist only about 20 groups of them are considered gemstones.

Deep, rich emerald, where does this color appear for you?
Precious gemstones [including diamond, corundum (ruby and sapphire), beryl (emerald and aquamarine), topaz, and opal] have the three qualities of beauty, durability, and rarity.

Many angles, some off by themselves still distinguishing and important.
Semiprecious gemstones (all other gemstones) have only one or two of these qualities.
